Chapter 17: The Recording
The man in the good coat did not get to finish his smile.
Cavan crossed the study in three strides, took the gloved wrist, and turned it until the small grey phone fell into his other palm.
The man's knee hit the carpet.
"Say that again," Cavan said, very softly.
"I was only passing on," the man gasped.
"Then pass on this."
Cavan laid him on his face and zip-tied his wrists with the cord from the study lamp.
Ingrid took the phone out of Cavan's hand.
It was warm from the man's glove, and the screen was dark.
She held down the button on the side, and the screen lit.
It showed a photograph of a man in a Sandvik Freight windbreaker, laughing, with his arm in a white cast.
"It still works," she whispered.
Cavan collected the bag of papers the men had packed, the hospital file, the photographs.
He texted W.
In nine minutes four members of the Ledger came up the freight elevator in coveralls and took the five men away.
"They'll be in front of a federal prosecutor before sunrise," Cavan said. "They'll say Torsten's name, because they won't want to say anything else."
