Chapter 23: Folded Chairs
Todd had answered his father in one word, to his shoes: "March."
His father took the keys to the company truck out of his hand.
In a level voice, he told a hundred and thirty people that his son no longer worked at the yard.
Then he wrote me a check for six thousand three hundred and eighty dollars.
He wrote it on the hood of the white truck, with a pen from the caterer.
"It's yours," he said. "It was always yours."
I took it.
I did not thank him, and he did not ask me to.
Shea walked down the bluff alone, carrying her shoes, with the new ring still on and nobody beside her.
Her broker did not come back, and neither did the women.
Todd's mother stopped in front of me with her folded gloves in her hand.
"I'm sorry, Kirsten," she said. "I should have looked at you in the car."
"You looked."
"I should have gotten out."
Then she went to her husband, and they left, and Darby hugged me so hard my ribs ached.
By seven the guests had gone, and the caterers had folded the tent.
The sun hung low and orange over the bay, and the wind had dropped.
The white chairs lay in stacks along the grass, and only the arch was left standing, with its roses going soft at the edges.
Brennan and I stood on the bluff where it had all begun.
I took his hand and pulled him down into the grass among the folded chairs.
"We can't," he said, grinning. "The caterer is loading."
"The caterer is in his truck with the radio on."
