Brennan said yes on the bluff with lemon cake on his chin, and we waited for June.
We married on a Saturday, at low tide, on my father's oyster flats in Wellfleet.
There were twenty-six guests, in rubber boots.
My father's cousin had been ordained on the internet the week before.
He performed the ceremony in his canvas hat, with a thermos at his feet.
"I want it understood," he said, "that I told everyone about this first."
Everyone laughed, and Darby, in a yellow dress and waders, wiped her eyes with her wrist.
She stood beside me as my witness.
Brennan's best man was his deckhand, who wore a tie for the first time in his life and cried before anyone had said anything.
The ceremony was supposed to start at ten past four.
I had said no.
"We start at four-thirty," I told Brennan, "when the boat comes in."
"The four-thirty boat," he said, and kissed my hand.
I did not walk up an aisle.
My father walked beside me out across the wet sand, with the bay shining on both sides and the gulls standing in the shallows.
He did not say a word until we reached the others.
Then he put my hand in Brennan's, and he said, "Go and eat something."
I laughed so hard that I cried.
