Chapter 16: Her Best Friend

Kendra came into the great hall with a paper bag in one hand and her eyes red.

She had put on a pale grey dress and no makeup, and she looked like a girl who had not slept in a week.

Every person in the hall had been told to stay in their seat.

Lucan sat on the dais with Tobias at his shoulder.

Beside them sat the Moon Court's envoy, a grey-haired woman in a plain black coat, with a notebook open on her knee.

Hazel sat in a chair by the fire, a blanket on her lap and a stick across her knees.

I stood in the middle of the floor and waited.

"Orla." Kendra's voice broke. "Oh, Orla."

"You said you wanted to confess."

"I do. I do. I can't live with it."

She came a few steps closer and set the bag on the long table.

"Brock made me post the photo. He stood over me and said he would throw me out of the pack if I didn't. And Mama. Mama made me look at your shoulder. I swear it's all them. I only did what they said because I was scared."

"Scared."

"I love you." She burst into tears. "You're my best friend. You've been my best friend since we were eight."

"Eighteen years," I said.

"Yes!"

"And you want me to forgive you."

"I want you to know I never meant it."

I looked at the bag.

"What's in that?"

"A peace offering." She wiped her cheek. "Honey cake. And tea. From the old tin, the one your grandmother used to keep. For all of us."

She took out a flask and a pile of paper cups and began to pour.

Tobias stepped down from the dais.
