Chapter 17: The Deal

Lucan's POV

I did not wait for the Court to finish with Kendra.

I took Tobias and two guards, and we went down the mountain by the logging road in the dark.

Orla wanted to come.

I said no, and she looked at me with those hazel eyes for a long second.

"Then take Hazel's stick," she said, "and hit someone."

I almost smiled.

I did not take the stick.

The Silver Creek clinic is a low brick building behind the pack hall, with one light on in the back.

I left the guards in the pines and went to the window with Tobias.

The healer sat at her desk with her coat on.

Brock stood in front of her, pacing, with a bandage on his arm from the quarry.

"She shifted," he said. "Silver, healer. You said her wolf was dead."

"I said asleep," the healer said, perfectly calm.

"A rite holds until the true mate is near. I told you the King was a risk."

"You told me he was a rumor."

"I told you what I knew."

"Kendra is in a cell now!"

"Kendra was a silly girl and I raised her badly." She folded her hands.

"Sit down, boy. You are an Alpha and you are making a noise like a dog."

He sat.

My wolf stirred in my chest, and I put one hand on the glass to hold myself still.

"Here is what happens," the healer said.

"In three nights the Blood Moon table opens. You will stand before the Court and claim a lost prize, as is your right."

"On what ground?"

"You will say the King took a mated wolf by trickery and forged the ledger himself."

"They have the ledger. They have the blood cloths."
