Chapter 26: Ewan's POV: Before Moonrise

Ewan's POV

At four in the afternoon Briony found me in the barn, oiling a saddle that nobody was going to ride.

"Corbin's got Carys locked in the pantry and the nurse watching him," she said. "The envoy has the Bowl swept for silver. My grandfather is asleep. I have three hours."

"You should rest."

"I'm resting."

She climbed the loft ladder, and she looked down at me from the top rung.

"Come up, Doyle."

I put the rag down and went up after her.

The loft was warm and dim, and it smelled of old hay.

She turned at the top and took my face in both hands.

I understood that she was frightened and had decided to do something about it.

"Rafe is out there," I said. "I should be walking the tree line."

"In an hour." She pushed me back onto a stack of bales. "I need you here first."

I sat down hard, and she knelt between my knees.

She undid my belt with steady fingers and pulled the zipper down.

My cock was hard before she touched it.

"Briony."

"Shut up," she said gently. "Let me."

She took me in her fist, and then she bent and put her mouth on the head, and the world went white.

I got my hand in her hair and tried to keep it still.

She sucked me slowly, with her tongue flat against the underside, and she looked up at me while she did it.

"Fuck," I said. "Look at you."

She took me deeper, until I hit the back of her throat, and she hummed around me.

My hips jerked, and I swore, and she pulled off with a wet sound and smiled.
