Chapter 27: The Full Moon
Briony's POV
I walked down into the Bowl at moonrise with my mother's letter inside my shirt and Rafe's silver knife in my boot.
Ewan had gone up to the top row at dusk to find the guards, and he hadn't come back.
A Council runner had told me one bow was in hand, and he couldn't say where the second one was.
I had heard nothing from the north tier since.
The stone tiers were full to the top.
Nine packs sat in the torchlight, and nobody coughed or whispered.
The Council's envoy stood on the sand in his gray overcoat and held up one hand.
"Rafe Kingsley answers the Council's sentence by combat," he said. "Briony Hartwell is the accuser. If he wins, the sentence is void. If he loses, he loses the name and the seat."
He looked up at the dark ring of faces.
"Where is the Alpha of Redmoor?"
"Here."
Rafe came out of the tunnel on the far side.
His shirt was torn, and there were scratches down his forearms, and there was leaf litter in his hair.
He had been in the woods all day, and he looked it.
He also looked calm, and that frightened me more than anything.
"Bri," he said. "Last chance. Walk away, and I'll let the Hartwells keep their land."
"Take your shirt off, Rafe."
His smile slipped.
"I want the packs to see there's nothing under it," I said. "No silver, no wire, no trick."
He pulled the shirt over his head and dropped it.
Then he stepped out of his boots and trousers, and his back bowed, and the black wolf tore out of him.
