Chapter 7: The Bowl

The Bowl was a round stone pit cut into the hillside behind the lodge, with three tiers of seats around it.

Every seat was full.

Every wolf in Redmoor had come, and a few from other packs I didn't know, and all of them had phones.

Two warriors put Ewan on his knees at the edge of the sand with silver cuffs on his wrists.

He didn't fight them.

He looked at me, and I looked back, and I understood he was telling me to stop worrying about him.

I didn't.

"Rules," the oldest elder called from the top tier. "A Blood Challenge ends with a yield or a death. The Alpha has accepted the challenge. The challenger fights as she is."

I stood in the middle of the sand in my ruined black dress and bare feet.

Across from me Rafe pulled off his jacket and handed it to Corbin without looking at him.

"Last chance," Rafe said. "Kneel, and I'll make it quick."

"No."

"Briony. You never shifted in your life."

"Come and see."

He shifted where he stood.

It happened in a heartbeat.

His shoulders broke wide, and his face stretched out, and a black wolf the size of a pony came down on all fours in front of me.

The crowd roared.

He hit me before I could take a step.

I felt the ground leave my feet, and then the sand came up and knocked all the air out of me.

His teeth closed on my shoulder, and I screamed.

He let go and circled.

He wasn't trying to end it.

I understood that when he came at me again and raked my ribs instead of my throat.

He was giving them a show.
