Chapter 8: The Ring

"Unlock him," I said.

The two warriors beside Ewan looked at the elder on the top tier, and not at me.

The oldest elder hesitated.

Then he nodded, once, and the keys came out.

The silver cuffs hit the sand.

Ewan's wrists were burned raw, and he held them out in front of him and looked at them.

"Come on," I said, and took his elbow.

"You're bleeding."

"So are you."

"I'm fine."

"Then walk."

Corbin met us at the gate of the Bowl with my torn coat over his arm.

It was the first time I had ever seen my brother afraid of me.

I looked up at the top tier.

The gray overcoat was gone, and the seat was empty.

"The man with the notebook," I said. "Who is he?"

"Council envoy." Corbin's mouth went tight. "He left before the yield. He wrote down your name first."

I thought of the two words underlined twice, and I put it away to be afraid of later.

"Bri," he said. "Grandpa's awake. He's asking for the ring."

I put my hand in my fist.

The signet ring was still there, hot against my palm.

"Where's Rafe?" I asked.

"His men carried him to the Kingsley house." He swallowed. "He can't stand up."

"Good."

I took the coat from him and put it on, and I didn't thank him.

Alden's room was full.

The five elders stood along one wall in their dark coats.

The night nurse stood at the foot of the bed with her arms folded.

My grandfather lay propped against the pillows with his eyes open and the oxygen line in place, and when I came in, his face moved in a way I hadn't seen in a long time.
