At six the next morning Okabe stood outside Daikoku Store 214 with a paper cup of tea.
She watched them walk up the street.
The shutters were half up.
A delivery truck was backing in, and a woman in a green apron was hauling milk crates onto the pavement.
"Stock check," Okabe said. "Both of you. Side by side. I'm going for a coffee."
She left them there.
Tomoya and Ren looked at each other.
"Chilled aisle," Ren said.
"Dry goods."
"I took dry goods last time."
"There was a last time?"
Ren didn't answer.
The woman in the green apron put down her crate and bowed to him.
She was about sixty-five, with white at her temples, and her whole face lit up.
"Kisaragi-san," she said. "You came back."
"Good morning." He bowed lower than Tomoya had ever seen him bow. "How's your knee?"
"Better! My granddaughter got the place at the nursery. You remembered."
