Chapter 15: The Pack Hall

The whole Northvale Pack was crammed into the hall, and Dahlia sat at the front in a white chair, weeping.

She wore a pale blue dress and her dark glasses.

Her left sleeve was pushed up, and four purple bruises marked her forearm.

Mom knelt beside her with both arms around her waist.

Tobias stood on the dais at our father's right hand with his arms folded.

Bram walked in beside me, and the crowd parted to let him through and closed behind him.

His hands hung open at his sides.

I had told him to keep them that way, and he did.

"Bram Tolland," my father said from the high chair. "Step forward."

Bram stepped forward.

"Last night my daughter woke in her own bed with a man's hand on her arm," my father said. "She smelled the barn on him and felt the wool of a work coat."

A hiss ran through the hall.

"Your coat," Tobias said. "Your smell. Your clause."

Dahlia lifted her face toward the sound of his voice.

"I don't want anyone punished," she said, in her softest, saddest voice. "I only want to be safe."

My mother sobbed.

"He did it to Keeva too, I'm sure," Dahlia whispered. "Poor Keeva, she's too afraid to say so."

I felt my wolf lunge at the bars of my ribs.

"Say something," Tobias snapped at me. "Or are you going to stand there while he beats your sister's blood out of her arm?"

"I'm listening," I said. "Please go on."

My father frowned.

"The clause is plain," he said. "One blow from either party voids the contract. If Tolland struck Dahlia, he has violated pack law, and he is a violent laborer with a record."

"He's the man who broke a foreman's jaw," Tobias added helpfully.

"I will have him chained in the cells," my father said. "And Keeva returns to my house, where her sister will be safe from her husband."
