Chapter 16: The Royal Test

The Princess's healer walked down the aisle of my father's hall with a lacquered case under her arm, and nobody dared to breathe.

She was a gray-haired woman in royal blue, and she had examined three kings.

"Alpha Thorburn," she said, bowing exactly as far as the law required. "I'm told a daughter of your house has lost her sight."

"My daughter Dahlia," my father said, rising from his chair. "A great tragedy. The Crown's kindness is not necessary."

"It was Princess Isabelle's wish," said the healer.

She turned to Dahlia.

"Miss Thorburn. I would be honored."

Dahlia's hands twisted in her lap.

"I'm so tired," she said faintly. "My head is aching, and the light hurts."

"Then I will use very little light."

"I would rather my own Healer."

"I'm sure you would," the healer said pleasantly. "Her Highness has asked me to remind the Northvale Pack that a refusal of a royal examination is entered in the Crown's record."

My father looked at Dahlia.

I saw the doubt cross his face, very small and very quick, and then I saw him push it down.

"Let her do it, sweetheart," he said gruffly. "Then we can be done with this nonsense."

Dahlia lifted her chin.

"Of course, Father."

The healer drew on a pair of white gloves, and stepped close.

She slid the dark glasses off Dahlia's face and handed them to the herald.

Without them, my sister's eyes were pale and wet and enormous, aimed at a point somewhere above the healer's shoulder.

"Please look straight ahead," said the healer. "You will feel a warmth."
