Chapter 17: The Salt Shed

Bram's POV

The Alpha could not make himself arrest me, so he did the next worst thing and sent me home with a guard on the road.

The herald's gold letter named both of us as guests at the Princess's gala, and a guard cannot chain a royal guest.

Keeva held my hand the whole walk back.

Her fingers were cold.

"He said he doesn't believe it," she said.

"I heard."

"He watched her lie to his face, and he still chose her."

"He's not done choosing," I said. "He just hasn't seen enough proof yet."

She laughed once, unhappily, and leaned on my arm.

I put her to bed with a hot stone at her feet and waited until she slept.

Then I took my old canvas jacket off the nail and went out into the dark.

I had a name in my pocket, and it was not from Keeva.

It was from the old woman with the cane, who had grabbed my sleeve at the end of the hearing.

"Tobias drives to the old salt shed at Pier Nine every night after supper," she'd whispered. "My grandson sweeps the dock. He says there's a light on in there at two."

It was one-forty when I reached the dock.

I came in on foot, along the sea wall, with the tide slapping the stones below me.

The shed squatted at the end of the pier with a strip of yellow light under its door.

Tobias's black truck sat out front.

I crouched at a broken slat in the wall and looked in.

The driver sat on a crate in the middle of the floor, the same thick man who had told us about the green door.

His wrists were tied behind him, and one eye was swollen shut.

Two hard men stood over him, strangers with split knuckles and city boots.

Tobias paced in front of them with an envelope.

"The Princess's healer put the sister in the record," he said. "It's gone sideways."
