Chapter 21: Cutter's Ridge

Bram's POV

The poison reached my chest while I was still lying in the gravel, shouting her name.

It felt like my mother's death, the one I had held in my arms at fourteen.

My skin burned from the inside, and my wolf would not rise.

The royal guards came pounding across the lawn and found me alone at the end of the lane.

"The van," I said. "Green door. Went east."

"Lie still, sir."

"She's got Keeva."

A gray-haired woman dropped to her knees beside me, and I knew her by her blue sleeves.

The Princess's healer cut my trouser leg away and swore under her breath.

"A wolfsbane dart," she said. "How long?"

"Six minutes," a guard said.

"Then it's in the blood." She opened her lacquered case with quick hands. "I have moonroot. It will stop the poison, and it will hurt worse than the poison did."

"Do it."

"It will leave you weak."

"I said do it."

She jammed the needle into my thigh and pushed the plunger down.

My mother had died for lack of that needle, and I clenched my teeth and let the fire go through me.

I stayed on my feet.

I do not know how.

When the worst of it passed, I was kneeling on the gravel with sweat running into my eyes and the healer's hand on my shoulder.

"You should not stand for an hour," she said.

"I can't wait an hour."

I got up.

My leg held.

I closed my eyes and reached for the thread that had opened in my chest the first night, the one that ran from me to her.

It was thin and frayed, but it was there.

It pulled north.

"Mountain road," I said. "Fast. Away from the city."

"There are a hundred mountain roads," the captain said.

"Then I'll find the right one."

A truck came tearing up the service lane with its headlights blazing.

It braked in a spray of gravel, and Rainer Thorburn climbed out.
