Chapter 22: The Pack Trial

Keeva's POV

They tried my sister in the same hall where she had accused my husband, and this time nobody wept for her.

Three royal guards stood behind her chair.

She wore a gray prison smock, and her blond hair hung loose and unwashed, and she had no dark glasses.

Her bare eyes moved over the crowd, left and right, as bright and quick as ever.

Every person in the Northvale Pack was there, and the lower farmers had taken the whole back wall again.

At the front, on a plain bench, sat the council of elders in their gray robes.

Beside them sat the Princess's herald, with the Crown's seal in his lap.

My father stood below the dais.

He had not been allowed the high chair.

"The Pack of Northvale will judge its own," the eldest councillor said, "under pack law, with the Crown to witness."

He read the charges, and it took a long time.

Every one of them had a witness, and the lodge men in the harbor cells had signed for the last.

Nobody in the hall asked him to hurry.

"How do you answer?" the councillor asked.

Dahlia lifted her chin.

"I answer that I am a poor victim of a cruel family," she said, in a soft, sweet, shaking voice. "I've been so lonely."

Nobody moved.

"I've always wanted only to be loved," she said, and tears slid down her cheeks right on time.

"Did you pay a driver to squeeze your arm so a man's hand would show?" I asked.

She turned her head toward me.

I had not been called to speak.

The councillor lifted a hand, and let me.

"Did you walk into my cabin in Bram's coat, Dahlia, with a belt in your hand?"

"I have never touched you."

"Did you cut a wire to pull my husband out of my bed?"

Her face went white and sharp and beautiful.

"I did what I had to," she hissed. "You were going to take everything. The academy, the princess's favor, Mother's eyes on you. I was the oldest, and I was the one who was supposed to shine."
