Chapter 23: No Forgiveness on Your Knees

My mother's forehead touched the stone at my feet.

"Keeva," she said. "Please."

The hall was silent.

I had waited a whole life to hear my mother say my name like that.

I had never thought it would feel so cold.

"Get up, Mom."

"I can't," she sobbed. "I was wrong. I was so wrong. I screamed at you and I locked you in that room, and I called you cruel."

"You did."

"I held her, and I turned my back on you." She lifted a face I barely knew, swollen and gray. "Forgive me, my baby. Say you forgive me."

Behind her, I heard a heavy tread.

My father walked up the aisle slowly, with his ring finger bare, and went down on one knee beside her.

Then the other knee.

The Alpha of Northvale knelt on the stone in front of the whole pack.

"I sentenced you on a lie," he said, and his voice cracked in the middle. "I gave you to a man I thought was a brute. I did not look."

"No," I said. "You did not."

"I have no right to ask."

"No."

"But I am asking," he said. "Whatever you want. The house, the land, my name. I will give it to you today."

Bram's hand closed around mine.

I looked down at the two of them.

I had dreamed of this a hundred times in the dark, with my back burning and the belt coming down.

In the dream I forgave them, because I was tired, and because I loved them.

"You're sorry now," I said slowly. "You're sorry because it cost you everything."

"Keeva."

"You weren't sorry when it cost me."

Mom flinched.

"I put proof in your hands, and you chose her twice," I said.

"I know."

"I'm not going to forgive you today. I may not forgive you at all."

My father bowed his head.

"No," I said. "You don't get to cry on my floor and have me say it's all right."

I took a breath.

"You can visit the lower farms when you're invited," I said. "You can bring bread, like everyone else. If you can earn it, Mom, you can try. But not today. And not on your knees in front of a crowd, so you feel better."
