Chapter 24: The Lower Farms
I did not take the ring.
I stood on my own porch in Bram's shirt with a blanket over my shoulders and the mark still raw on my skin, and I looked at the gold circle on its velvet cushion.
Down in the lane, the lower farmers were gathering.
Someone had told them.
They stood in the cold with their caps in their hands, fifty of them and then a hundred, and the old woman with the cane stood in front.
"The council honors me," I said to the herald. "Thank them for me."
"You decline?"
"I decline."
A murmur ran down the lane.
"The Alpha's seat belongs to a pack that chooses its own," I said. "Let them choose someone who did not grow up in that house."
"Then what do you ask, Miss Thorburn?" said the herald. "The Crown will hear it."
"The lower farms."
I said it loudly, so that everyone in the lane could hear.
"Not as a sentence. As a charter. The land, the greenhouses and the harvest belong to the people who work them. The Alpha's house takes no tithe from them again, and no Healer of this pack refuses a gate at night."
The old woman closed her eyes.
"And the Healer of Northvale," I said, "will be one the farms choose."
The herald unrolled a blank sheet and began to write.
Nobody in the lane spoke.
Then a young farmhand at the back threw his cap in the air and shouted.
It spread down the lane in a wave, one cry after another, until the whole hill rang with it.
Bram stood in the doorway behind me with his arms folded and his eyes wet.
"You are going to run this place," he said.
"We are."
"I'm a laborer."
"You're the man I mated," I said. "And you're going to be the one they bring the hard cases to, because you never lie to anyone's face."
