Chapter 14: What He Knew

Josie's POV

I took my hands off his belt.

"You waited," I said. "In Switzerland."

"Yes."

"I didn't know where you were."

"I know that."

"Nobody told me anything. My mother said you'd moved away. Your family sent me a card with a return address in Boston."

"I know that too." He sat up on the edge of my bed, and he would not look at me. "It still took six years."

I pulled the sheet over my chest.

I had a speech for his hurt, and it was true, and it was fair.

I had a worse speech under it.

"How long have you known?" I said.

He closed his eyes.

"Since the Sunday dinner."

"The first one. The night I stood up and invited everyone."

"Yes."

"You lay beside me in my old bed that night."

"Yes."

"You let me stand in that tub and whisper to myself that this time she wouldn't get you." My voice shook. "You let me lie awake making a plan to protect you."

"It was a good plan."

"Don't!"

He flinched at the noise, and I hated that I had done it, and I did not stop.

"I thought you were glass. I thought one more shock and you'd break, so I carried all of it. I wrote the list. I lied to your mother. I shielded you from your own life, and you knew every beat and said nothing."

"I wanted you to choose it yourself."

"I'd have chosen it with you! I died alone on a floor, Caleb. I woke up alone. And for weeks I was still alone, and you were right there in the bed."
