Chapter 15: Aunt Gwen Is Useful
The guard walked Bianca out, and she went smiling, with a little wave over her shoulder.
Caleb and I stood in the lobby with the card between us.
"I came to be angry beside you," I said.
"That's not a normal reason to come to someone's work."
"It's the one I had."
He almost smiled, and then he did not.
"I was wrong to decide what you could carry," he said. "I'm not saying I'd change what I did. I'm saying it was your life too, and you should have been asked."
"Yes."
"Ask me anything. I'll answer it."
I had one.
"In the last life. Before the shower, before they sent you away. Did you ever think I'd stood by?"
His hand closed around the headphones at his neck.
"For six years," he said. "Then I came to your house and saw what it had cost you."
I had to look at the ceiling for a second.
"Then you can't say I never came," I said. "I would have walked there. I didn't know there was a there."
"I know."
"Say it as something you know, not just something you feel."
He thought about it, as he does.
"I know you would have come," he said. "The feeling hasn't caught up. Give it time."
That was the whole truce.
It was plain and small, and it was enough to put my forehead against his shirt.
He put one arm around me.
The guard behind the desk found something to look at.
That night Caleb sat on my couch, careful and a little formal, and we looked at the card on my coffee table as if it might go off.
