Chapter 6: Sound Mind

I took Rosalind's hands off my face and held them for a second before I let them go.

"Hello, Ros," I said. "I took my mother's car."

"Your mother?" She glanced past me at the elevator. "Damon, honey, she isn't allowed. We talked about this."

"She's in the lot. She's fine."

I walked past her into the boardroom.

The whole table stopped talking.

Brooks started to stand and then sat back down, because the chair he was in was the one at the head of the table.

I stopped beside it.

"That's mine," I said.

The table was very quiet.

He looked at the lawyers, then at Rosalind.

Then he got up with a wide, easy smile, picked up his coffee, and moved one seat down.

I sat.

The leather was still the right height, because nobody had changed it.

"Mr. Ostrow," said the woman from Harlan Route. She was fifty or so, with a gold clip on her folder and a calm voice. "We were told you wouldn't be able to attend."

"I'd like to attend my own sale."

"Damon," Rosalind said. "Please. You're tired."

"I'll be quick."

I took the divorce agreement out of my jacket and laid it flat on the table.

"Ma'am, would you read the first paragraph aloud? I'd like everyone to hear it."

She glanced at Brooks.

"Go ahead," Brooks said, laughing a little. "He's going to sign it anyway."
