Chapter 7: Thirty-Six Visits
Rosalind was the first to speak.
"That page is a mistake," she said. "Brooks, tell them it's a mistake."
Brooks did not answer.
He was looking at the page in the Harlan woman's hand.
I watched him read the date.
He did not look surprised, and Rosalind did.
"Mr. Ostrow," the woman said. "Are you telling this table that every document signed under your power of attorney since last November is void?"
"I'm telling you who signed them."
"We have a signed purchase agreement dated the third of March."
"Signed by my wife," I said. "On my behalf. When I had been sane for four months."
One of the lawyers cleared his throat.
The elevator chimed behind me.
My mother came out first in her green coat, holding her handbag in front of her with both hands, and Maura walked a step behind with the laptop bag on her shoulder.
"I waited until the elevator," my mother said to nobody in particular.
She came around the table and stopped behind my chair.
Rosalind stared at her.
"Hello, Rosalind," my mother said. "I got your note."
She took the soft, folded sheet of notebook paper from her handbag and laid it next to the divorce agreement.
Nobody touched it.
"Who is this?" Brooks said, looking at Maura. "Security."
"I'm the night nurse," Maura said. "I've been in the room for thirty-six visits."
She opened the laptop and set it at the end of the table.
"Damon has the right to his own records. This is a copy of the family-room file."
