Chapter 12: The Panel Moves Up

I read the petition standing up, in Mason's jacket, with my hair still tangled from his hands.

It said I had abandoned the marital home.

It said I was "emotionally unstable" and that Lance had "serious concerns for her welfare."

It said that, in light of his partner's pregnancy, he asked the court to deny me any share of his earnings.

"His partner," Roz said, reading over my arm. "That's a nice word for a woman who has never touched him."

"I have it recorded," I said. "I have both recordings."

"Do not hand them to a lawyer yet," Mason said.

He was zipping his jeans, and he did not look the least bit sorry.

"Why not?"

"Because a lawyer will take eight weeks to file them, and Camille will have eight weeks to bury them." He pulled a sweater over his head. "We use them in the room, on the day, where nobody can quietly lose them."

His phone chimed.

He looked at it, and then at me.

"The Guild moved the panel," he said. "Today. Noon. Draper Pictures asked for it. They gave the organizers three hours' notice."

"Why?"

"Because Camille wants you at your most tired and least prepared."

"Is she wrong?"

"Look at you," Roz said. "Eleven hours of no sleep and a shirt that isn't yours. She's a genius."

I laughed, and then the laugh turned into something I swallowed.

"I don't need to prepare," I said. "I wrote the ending."

"Then we're going."

"We have two hours," Roz said briskly. "I have your navy dress in the trunk. I will do your hair in the car. Mason, you will drive, because I need both hands."
