Chapter 13: Which Bank

I did not step back from her hand.

I stood with my cheek under her palm and counted the doors along the corridor.

"Which bank, Camille?" a man said behind her.

Her hand dropped.

My stepfather stood at the far end of the hall with his coat still on and his car keys in his fist.

He had more gray in his hair than he'd had three years ago.

He was looking at his daughter, and not at me.

"Dad." Camille turned, and the smile came back so fast I almost admired it. "I didn't hear you come in."

"I came in through the stage door," he said. "Your assistant let me past. She thought I was a panelist."

"Willa's not herself. I was only trying to calm her."

"You told her you would pull every guarantee on my company this afternoon."

"I was being dramatic."

"You said it in plain words, and you said it twice."

Camille opened her mouth and shut it again.

My stepfather walked down the hall until he stood between us, and he took off his coat and folded it over his arm.

"Your office sent me a notice this morning moving this panel up three hours," he said. "I signed it. I didn't read why."

"The Guild asked for it."

"The Guild asked for nothing. Draper Pictures asked."

Nobody said a word.

I heard the crowd through the wall, thick and restless, and someone testing a microphone.

"Willa," my stepfather said, turning to me at last. "Your mother's house is mortgaged to that bank?"

"Camille just said so."

"I put that house up myself, four years ago, when the company needed cash." His jaw moved. "I never thought anyone would hold it over her daughter."

"Dad, you're misunderstanding..."

"I'm not." He raised one hand, not loudly. "The loan is secured on this company, Camille. The only thing that can sink it is the credit on that film. Tell me something, and tell me in front of her."
