Chapter 14: Wrong Ending

I slid into the seat beside Roz as Camille started to talk.

The theater was full to the back wall, and every row had a phone held up.

Roz put a paper cup of water in my hand without looking at me.

"Drink," she whispered. "You look like a ghost in a navy dress."

"She's going to say it."

"She's going to say something."

Onstage, four chairs stood in a row under a banner.

Camille sat in the middle in white, with Lance on her left and Mason on her right.

Mason had his hands folded and his eyes on the floor.

He had not looked into the audience once.

I knew that was for me.

My stepfather sat in the front row with his coat across his knees and his arms crossed.

"The cut ending," Camille said into the microphone. She tipped her head and smiled at the moderator. "It's funny how much people want to know. Honestly, it was very small."

"Take us through it," the moderator said.

"Well, the wife has decided to leave her husband. We all know that." Camille let a soft laugh run through the room. "And everyone expects the ferry, the goodbye, the great gesture."

"That's the ending in the first draft?"

"That's what I wrote first. But it felt false."

I felt Roz go rigid beside me.

"So I wrote something truer," Camille said. "She is on the dock. The tide is coming in. She sees him walking toward her with a plate of supper in his hands, because he's finally learned to cook."

A few people made a warm sound.

"And she turns around," Camille said. "She takes the plate. And the last line, the very last, is the wife saying, 'Supper's late, but I'm hungry.'"
