Chapter 11: The Morning After

I wrapped the blanket around me and went to the door.

The wolf didn't run.

It sat down on the porch boards, silver eyes steady, as I turned the lock and opened the door.

It was bigger than any wolf had a right to be.

"Rhys?"

It lowered its head.

Then it shifted, bone and fur folding down, and Rhys crouched on the wet boards, naked and breathing hard, with the stitched arm clamped against his ribs.

I looked away, and then I didn't.

"Sorry," he said. "He wouldn't settle. I've been out here an hour."

"Your eyes were silver."

"They do that."

"When?"

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"When he's agitated."

"Term two," I said. "No lying."

He looked up at me with an expression I couldn't read.

"I'm not lying," he said. "I don't know what it is. He's never done it. He was at the window all night."

My own wolf, the one that had crouched in the back of my head all week, shifted.

She pressed forward gently, the way she hadn't once for Colton.

I put my hand flat over my chest and told her to wait.

"Come inside," I said. "You'll catch cold."

He came in, found a pair of jeans, and made coffee on the stove with his back to me.

I sat at the table in the blanket and watched his shoulders.

"Did you know?" I asked. "About Calista and the car."

His back went still.
