Chapter 10: The Harbor House

"Nobody," I said. "Nobody is watching."

Rhys looked at me over the open truck door for a long moment.

Then he shut it, and we didn't drive to Fernbank.

His house stood at the end of the docks, a narrow gray place on pilings with its door facing the water.

The rain started as he fitted the key into the lock.

It hammered the roof, and neither of us spoke until the door closed behind us.

The front room was bare. A table, two chairs, a kettle, a couch with a blanket folded over one arm.

He stood in the middle of it with his bandaged arm hanging, and he didn't touch me.

"Terms," he said, hoarse. "I said I'd keep it public."

"I know what I said."

"You can walk back out."

"I don't want to."

"Skye."

"Tell me to stop," I said. "If you want me to. Say it now."

He didn't say it.

I crossed the floor in my green dress and pushed the jacket off his shoulders.

It fell. His shirt was still open from the clinic, so I put my hands flat on his chest and slid them down over the scars.

He shuddered all the way through.

"I've wanted to do this since the bridge," I said.

"Since the ballroom," he said. "Since you walked in there in white and told three hundred wolves no."

His good hand found the zipper at my back.

It ran down slowly, and the dress went loose, and he pushed it off my shoulders and let it drop.

I stood there in my underwear while he looked at me.

"Fuck," he said very quietly.

"That's the idea."

I laughed, and then he kissed me, and I stopped laughing.

His mouth was hungry and wet and nothing like the careful kiss in the hall.

He walked me backward until the table was against my thighs and lifted me up onto its edge with one arm.

His palm slid up my back, unhooked my bra, and threw it somewhere.

His mouth went to my breast.
