Chapter 9: Boyd's Hall

The council hall of Saltmere held two hundred wolves at dawn, and every one of them had come to watch.

Alpha Boyd sat on the dais in a plain wooden chair.

Colton stood below him on the left, in the same blazer he'd worn at dinner.

Rhys and I stood on the right.

Calista sat in the front row between her father and an empty seat, with her gloved hands folded.

Boyd didn't waste a word.

"Last night eight Cinderfell wolves crossed the Fernbank bridge and tried to take a healer by force. A boy was bitten the day before. Who gave the order?"

Nobody answered.

Two Fernbank wolves brought the young man with the Cinderfell ring up the aisle with his hands tied.

His lip was split and his eye was swollen shut.

"Tell him what you told us," Rhys said.

"The heir ordered it," the young man said, loudly enough to fill the room. "Colton Reeve, with his seal. Bring her home before sunrise."

The hall started to murmur.

Colton took a step forward.

"That's not what I said."

"You signed the stand-down," Rhys said. "Our guard was pulled at nine."

"I pulled it so there'd be no violence! I asked them to talk to her, to ask her to come home. Not to hurt anyone."

"Not to be gentle about it," the young man said.

"I never said that."

"Then the Cinderfell Beta did," Boyd said from the chair, "and I'll hear him next."
