Chapter 8: The Apology

Rhys stepped into the doorway of the clinic with his shirt hanging open and his bandaged arm held against his chest.

He didn't say a word.

He just stood there, and Calista stopped on the porch step.

"Warden," she said, with a gentle little dip of her head. "I'm sorry to come so late. I didn't know you'd be here."

"I'm sure you didn't."

I came up behind him.

"What do you want, Calista?"

"To say sorry, properly, to your face." She pressed her gloved hands together. "At the dinner, there were so many people. It wasn't fair to you."

"It's after midnight."

"I know. I couldn't sleep until I'd done it."

She looked small on the dark porch, with the light on her pale hair.

I should have shut the door.

I told Rhys to wait outside and let her into the clinic, because I wanted to hear what she'd say with nobody listening.

He gave me a long look and stayed in the hall with the door open.

Calista sat on the exam table where he'd been sitting.

She did not take off her gloves.

"You must hate me," she said.

"I don't think about you much."

"That's kind." Her eyes filled. "Skye, I'll be honest. I've never wanted to be a Luna. I only wanted one day of it. Colton understood, and I thought you would too."
