Chapter 13: The Forfeit

The Cinderfell Alpha stopped ten feet from Boyd, and his forty wolves spread out across the grass behind him.

Over our heads the silver light was still running along the wire.

Nobody on the lawn said a word.

"Saltmere owes me a Luna," the Cinderfell Alpha said. "My Beta swore to my council that your heir had found his fated mate in my pack."

Lowell Drummond looked at the ground.

"On that oath I cut the harbor road toll for two years," the Alpha went on. "I opened the bonded lanes to your trucks, for one daughter in the Luna's chair."

He turned his head toward the gate, which was still lit.

"That gate says no daughter of mine was ever his mate. By the old law, a treaty built on a false bond is void, and the harbor road goes to the pack that was deceived."

"The old law also says you prove you were deceived," Boyd said. "Your Beta deceived you, Alpha. Mine didn't."

"Then I'll collect from the pack that was standing there."

"The Harvest rites run seven nights. The challenge is heard on the last one, and no wolf of yours crosses my line before then."

The Alpha smiled a little.

"Your line, Boyd, I'll respect. Fernbank was never in the treaty."

He turned and walked out through the crowd, and his forty wolves went with him.

Lowell Drummond went after them without once looking at his daughter.
