Chapter 14: What the Warden Knew
Rhys's POV
She didn't speak until we were on the river road with the pack house lights gone behind us.
I drove with both hands on the wheel, because it kept them where she could see them.
"Tell me," Skye said.
"You said not yet."
"I said not on the lawn. We're forty minutes from my father's yard, and you have all of them."
She sat with her back against the door and her arms crossed over a dress she had no business wearing to a fight.
I told her what I did with the booking first, because it was the part that made me look worst.
"You heard what I saw, on the lawn. Here is what I did about it."
"Which was?"
"Nothing, for a day. Then I went to my brother's door."
"You went to Colton?"
"I stood outside it." The wipers dragged across dry glass, and I turned them off. "I had my hand up to knock. I thought, he'll say it's a kindness. He'll say you agreed. And you'd have been in that house, and he would have talked you into it."
"I wouldn't have agreed."
"I know that now."
"You didn't know it then?"
"No."
She turned her head.
"I'd seen you twice before that," I said. "Once at the border treaty dinner, when you set a drunk wolf's dislocated shoulder at the buffet table and told him to behave. And once on the pack house steps, the day Colton introduced you, and you were smiling at him."
"I smiled at him because I thought he was a decent man."
"I know. That's what I couldn't stand."
It was out before I'd weighed it, and it hung in the cab.
