Chapter 15: The River

Skye's POV

"No," Rhys said.

On the dash, his father's breath came down the line, heavy and slow.

"Think, Rhys."

"I have. Fernbank isn't mine to sell, and it isn't yours."

"Then you aren't heir tonight, and you may not be on the last night."

"Then I'm not."

He ended the call with one thumb and turned his eyes back to the road.

I didn't say anything, because there was nothing in me that fit the shape of what I'd just heard.

He had just thrown away the seat he'd wanted most of his life, with one word, in front of me.

"Hold on," he said, and took the bridge turn at speed.

Headlights lit the whole river road.

Twenty Cinderfell wolves stood across the lane in their wolf forms, and more moved in the trees along the water.

Behind them, in my father's yard, a window had been broken, and someone was shouting.

"Stay in the truck," Rhys said.

I opened my door.

"Skye."

"My father is in that house."

He looked at me for exactly as long as it took him to see that I wasn't going to stay.

"Then stay behind me," he said, and shifted before his boots hit the gravel.

I'd only seen the Saltmere warden's wolf in a window and in the dark.

In the headlights, he was black and huge, with silver eyes, and he hit the nearest line of Cinderfell wolves at a dead run.

I tore off my shoes, let my gown pool in the cab, and called my wolf.
