Chapter 4: Her Terms

Rhys called back within one ring.

"Go on," he said.

"One. In private, you don't touch me. In public you can, but only when somebody is watching."

"Fine."

"Two. Neither of us lies about what we feel. If I hate this, I say so. If you do, you say so."

"I don't lie."

"Everyone says that."

"Then you'll find out." There was a pause. "Three?"

"Three. It ends at the Harvest Moon, whether you win or lose. I don't owe you a day after that."

"Agreed."

"And the guard stays on Fernbank's river from tonight, not from the day I walk into your father's house."

I heard a lighter click, and a long, slow breath.

"The guard went back on your river twenty minutes ago," Rhys said. "I told them before you called."

I sat very still on the edge of my bed.

"You were that sure I'd say yes."

"No. I just wasn't going to let them cross the river while you thought about it." His voice didn't change. "Dinner at the pack house tomorrow, seven. Wear something that isn't white."

The line went dead.

I wore green.

It was my mother's idea. She pressed the dress in the morning without speaking and then said, "Green is for the ones who stay."

Rhys picked me up in the gray truck at six.

He wore a dark jacket and a white shirt, open at the neck, and he looked at the dress for exactly as long as it took me to buckle my seat belt.
