Chapter 5: The Wrist

Thirty wolves waited for my answer, and I gave them the plain one.

"I'll hear you out," I told Colton. "Five minutes, on the terrace. Rhys stays at the door."

Rhys didn't argue.

He only looked at me, and I nodded once, and he rose and followed us out.

The pack house terrace faced the harbor, with strings of white lights and a small moon gate of wire and roses at the far end of the lawn.

Colton walked all the way to the gate before he stopped.

"Skye," he said. "I know I handled it badly."

"You handed my car to another woman."

"Let me say this properly." He took a breath. "Calista and I felt the bond the night we met, at the border treaty."

I said nothing.

"She told me, and then she made me promise to leave it alone. Her father would never allow it. She didn't want to ruin me." He rubbed his face. "She can't even stand to be touched, Skye. It hurts her. The bond aches when we're close and she has no mark to ease it."

"So the gloves," I said.

"So the gloves."

"And you kept this promise for two years, while you were choosing me."

"I chose you because I thought the other thing was impossible." He looked at me with the open, pleading look I used to like. "She asked for one ceremony, one day of it, to know what she'd never get. How could I say no?"
