Chapter 6: The Bridge

The Fernbank bridge was lit by the headlights of eight trucks, and every one of them had a Cinderfell plate.

Rhys stopped the pickup across the far lane and cut the engine.

On the near side of the bridge my father stood in his shirtsleeves with the eleven wolves he had.

The eight Cinderfell men faced them in a line, and none of them had bothered to shift.

"Stay in the truck," Rhys said.

"It's my bridge."

"Then stay behind me."

I got out and stayed beside him.

He sighed, and I think it was the closest he came to a laugh all night.

Rhys walked up the center of the road with his hands open.

"Evening," he said. "This is Saltmere's guard post. You're sixty feet from where you're allowed to be."

The man in front was thick-necked and young, with a Cinderfell ring on his hand.

"Not anymore," he said. "The guard was stood down at nine. Heir's orders."

"Colton's?"

"Signed with the heir's seal. Sorry, Warden."

He didn't look sorry.

Rhys didn't answer. He looked at the empty guard hut at the end of the bridge, where eight of his own wolves should have been standing.

Then he looked at me.

"He pulled them," I said.

"He pulled them."

My father stepped forward. "Rhys Trelawney, is that you? You have no right to..."

"Alpha Dunlap." Rhys didn't turn around. "Take your people back to the road. Take Skye too."
