Chapter 6: The Key Taped to the Card

My sister drove through two yellow lights and parked across a fire lane.

I ran into the school office with my coat half on.

Brad sat in a plastic chair by the counter with his work jacket folded over his knee.

Junie sat beside him with her backpack on her lap.

She looked up and her whole face changed.

"Mommy."

"I'm here, baby."

The principal came out of her office. "Mrs. Althouse, thank you for coming. Mr. Althouse says there was a misunderstanding."

"There wasn't," I said. "I told the secretary this morning that I would pick Junie up."

Brad stood. "I'm her father. I have every right to pick up my daughter."

"You do," the principal said carefully. "So does her mother."

The secretary and two parents waiting at the counter had stopped pretending not to listen.

"I took her out to bring her home," Brad said. "Her room is waiting. Her brother is waiting."

"Eli is not her brother."

"He's the closest thing she has."

Junie's hand slipped into mine.

"Mr. Althouse," I said, "you froze my card this morning, and then you came to my daughter's school and told them I had agreed to something I had never heard of."

Brad went still.

"I only wanted her somewhere safe."

"She was safe."

"Lana, you took her to your sister's without telling me."
