Chapter 7: Just Starting

Brad came to my sister's house on Saturday morning with a bouquet of grocery-store roses.

His truck was backed up to the curb.

I watched him from the front window while Junie ate cereal at the kitchen island behind me.

"Don't answer it," my sister said. "Let him stand there."

"If I don't, he'll come back every day."

I opened the door and stepped onto the porch, and pulled it shut behind me.

Brad held out the flowers. "I got you these."

"You got me whatever was left at the grocery checkout."

He ignored that. "Mona is better. She is walking around. I talked to her, and she's willing to move her things into the sewing room and let you have your bedroom back."

"That's generous of her."

"It is." He did not hear the edge. "Junie goes back to her room. You come home. We forget the whole week."

"And Eli?"

"Eli stays through the month."

"No."

"Lana."

"No."

A neighbor across the street had stopped raking leaves.

Brad lowered his voice. "I brought something."

He walked to the truck and let down the tailgate.

My two sewing machines sat in the bed, wrapped in moving blankets.

"I thought you'd want them," he said. "I'll set the sewing room back up myself. It's yours again as soon as you're home."

I looked at the machines.

I had learned to sew on the smaller one, in my mother's kitchen, the year before she died.
