Chapter 14: Eleven Forty
Camille ran the last twenty yards, and the camera ran with her.
She threw both arms around Tegan and held on.
"Birdie," she sobbed into her shoulder. "We saw the storm on the feed. I begged them to send me."
Tegan stood stiff and let it be filmed.
Over Camille's head she watched Cal pull his jacket straight and step back out of the shot.
He was looking at the camera operator, not at her, and she was grateful.
"I'm fine," Tegan said. "You can let go."
"Look at her hands," Camille told the lens. "She's freezing. Somebody get her a blanket."
A medic wrapped a foil sheet around Tegan's shoulders.
It crackled when she moved, and it was the same silver as the blanket on the cave floor.
The sled team started loading gear.
Camille looped her arm through Tegan's and steered her gently toward the edge of the ridge.
"Just a minute alone with my sister," she said to the camera operator. "Please. It's private."
The operator hesitated, then lowered the camera and backed off thirty feet.
Cal stayed where he was, near the cave, with his hand on the strap of his pack.
Camille stopped at the rim, where the wind took her voice.
Her face changed.
It did not turn cruel.
It went quiet and tired, the face of someone who had stopped performing.
"You look good," she said. "Better than last time."
"Last time?"
"Don't." Camille smiled a little. "I've been so careful with you, Birdie. I let you have the river. I let you have the call. I thought if you ran around being brave for a few months, you'd get it out of your system."
