Chapter 15: What We Believed

Tegan told him in his own tent, with the flap zipped and a lantern turned low.

Cal sat on his bedroll with his back against a crate of rope and did not interrupt once.

She told him about the wet floor first, and then she kept going until there was nothing left to say.

"I died there," she said. "On the second of March, next year. I woke up on the second of March this year, in my old bed."

His jaw worked.

"And Camille?"

"She woke up too. She knows things only I knew." Tegan pressed the heels of her hands against her eyes. "And she's done it all again, on purpose."

"And you believe her."

"I believe she remembers a drain."

He did not say that it was impossible.

He did not say she was tired, or in shock, or that the cave had rattled something loose.

He reached out and took her wrist, gently, and moved her hand away from her face.

"Go on," he said. "There's more."

"There's more."

She made herself look at him.

"In that life, two men grabbed me and Camille at the wrap gala. My brother Corbin led the rescue. He told the team to go for Camille first."

"Corbin," Cal said quietly.

"A man in a rescue vest carried her out past me. Black gloves. I never saw his face." Her voice shook and steadied. "I told you I wasn't sure about you, Cal. That was why."

He went very still.

"You thought it was me."

"I thought it could be. You're the one with the vest and the gloves and the training." She swallowed. "And then you were at the river before I even fell, on a hunch. Corbin called you for twelve minutes. I couldn't make it add up, so I never put it down."
