Chapter 29: Answer for It
Peyton stopped a foot from the wall of people.
She looked left. She looked right.
The tall boy was in front of her, and the cook, and a man from the third row of the bleachers with his arms folded.
None of them said a word.
"Peyton," I said. "Come back."
She turned around.
She walked back down the middle of the gym with four hundred wolves watching her loafers.
It was the longest walk I've ever seen anybody take.
She stopped in front of me.
"Answer," the Priestess said.
"Yes," Peyton said. "I pushed her."
The girl with the cane closed her eyes.
"The ledger is answered," the Priestess said. "Now the claimant speaks."
I closed the black book and held it against my chest.
I'd thought about this moment every night for thirty days.
I'd thought I would feel big.
I just felt very clear.
"Peyton's father," I said.
He stood up off the folding chair.
"You ran the Run for money," I said. "Now the pack decides what that costs you."
I didn't raise my voice.
