Chapter 30: Their Vote
They voted in the gym the next night, with the big doors open.
No folding table. No board.
Just a cardboard box from the kitchen on a stool at center court, and a stack of index cards.
Every wolf in Madrone Ridge walked down out of the bleachers, wrote a name on a card and dropped it in.
The omegas came down first.
Nobody told them to.
They just walked down off the back wall in a line, and the whole gym watched them do it.
Lark went first of all.
She wrote her card with her tongue between her teeth, shielding it with her hand.
"No peeking," she told the box.
I didn't vote.
It wasn't my pack.
I sat on the bottom bleacher beside the Stonecrop elder.
I wore jeans and a black sweater the cook had found me, because my jacket was in pieces.
"You could have just given it to him," the elder said.
"Then it would've been mine," I said. "And he'd have been holding it for me."
She patted my knee with her stick.
"Your father would have argued with you about that for a week."
"I know."
"He'd have lost."
The padlock woman counted the cards out loud, one at a time, standing on the stool.
"Halloway."
"Halloway."
"Halloway."
Somebody in the varsity section had written Rhett's name, as a joke.
Rhett stood up and said, "No," and sat down again, and that was the end of that.
One card said COACH PEPPERONI.
The padlock woman read it out flat.
"I'm counting it," she said. "We all know who it means."
The gym laughed.
Three hundred and eighty-one cards.
Three hundred and sixty-two for Cade Halloway.
The padlock woman got down off the stool.
"Madrone Ridge has an Alpha," she said.
Cade stood up from the end of the first row.
He didn't make a speech.
He looked at the box, and the cards, and the four hundred faces, and then at the back wall where the omegas used to stand.
