Chapter 31: Fifty Courts
I looked up at the gray sky for a while.
"Yes," I said. "I'm leaving."
His hand tightened on mine.
"For two weeks," I said. "Fifty courts. Six of them nearly went to war over a man with my seal. They need to see my face."
"Two weeks."
"And then I'm coming back. And then I'm leaving again. That's the job. Fifty packs don't sit still."
He was quiet.
"Come with me," I said. "As far as you can."
"I've been Alpha for six hours."
"Then you've got a board," I said. "And a Beta's seat with an omega in it."
He laughed up at the moon.
"She'll paint the board room pink to spite Peyton."
"She'll paint it orange. She hates pink."
Lark put both of us in his truck the next afternoon with a bag of sandwiches.
"Go," she said. "Bring back souvenirs. Bring back jerky. I'm on the board, I've got this. The padlock lady's going to teach me what a quorum is."
"You don't know what a quorum is?" Cade said.
"Coach Pepperoni, I have been on the board for nineteen hours."
