Chapter 32: The Ridge
I didn't say yes right away.
I held out my right hand.
My thumb still had a pale band of skin on it, where the moonstone had sat for thirty days.
"That one," I said. "That's where it goes."
"That's your thumb."
"I know."
He laughed, and his hand stopped shaking, and he put his mother's ring on my thumb, where the leash used to be.
It was too big.
It didn't matter.
"Yes," I said.
He kissed me against the low wall on the gym roof, and this time nobody ran.
We were married a year later, on the quarry ledge.
It took the whole pack that year to make it a garden.
The omegas dug the beds in April.
The varsity carried the soil up the quarrymen's stair in buckets, two hundred trips.
Rhett carried more than anyone and didn't mention it once.
By September the broad flat stretch of ledge above the deep water was all wild roses and lavender and a long wooden bench.
At the near end, over the stone shelf, stood a railing of black iron.
The girl with the cane had picked the spot for it.
