We got downstairs in under two minutes, which is a record for two people with no clean socks.

Reeve's sweater was on backward.

My braid was half undone, and I had buttoned my flannel one hole off.

The front door stood open, and the cold spring air smelled of diesel and wet pine.

My mother was already in the kitchen in her quilted vest, with her suitcase on the floor and a bag of oranges on the table.

"There she is!" she cried.

She crossed the room and took my face in both hands, and then she was hugging me so hard that my ribs creaked.

"Mom, you're early."

"We drove all night. Ray said the roads were clear, and I couldn't wait another minute."

She smelled of cinnamon gum and sunscreen.

I held on to her for a very long time.

Over her shoulder I saw Ray come through the back door with a duffel bag in each hand.
