Chapter 22: The Swing

At one in the morning, with my mother and Ray asleep behind the upstairs window, I took Reeve by the hand.

I led him out onto the porch.

I wore his canvas coat and my boots and nothing else.

He wore jeans, a T-shirt and a look of pure alarm.

"Page," he whispered. "My father's twenty feet above us."

"Then be quiet."

The front porch ran the whole length of the house, with the cedar swing hung from chains at the north end.

The night was thirty degrees, clear and still, and my breath hung in the porch light.

I pushed him down onto the swing.

"The camera," he said, nodding up.

The little blue light was blinking above the door.

I took my wool scarf off the peg by the door and stood on a chair.

I draped it over the camera, twice around, and tucked the end.

The blue dot vanished.

"There," I said. "They get enough."

"They have seen enough."

"They haven't seen this."

He started to laugh, silently, with his forehead in his hand.

I stepped over his lap and sat down on his thighs, facing him, and the swing rocked back an inch.

Both chains creaked.

We froze.

Nothing moved upstairs.

"Plant your boots," I breathed.

He planted them on the porch floor.

The swing held still.

I opened the coat and let him look.

The cold air struck my bare skin, and my nipples went tight, and his eyes went over me, slow.

"Jesus, Page."

"Keep your voice down," I said.

"You're not wearing anything."

"I wanted to see how fast you'd notice."

His hands came up under the coat and found my waist.

They were warm and rough and shaking.

I kissed him.

His mouth was hot against the cold, and I tasted the cold on his lips.

I fumbled with his button and the zipper while I kissed him, and I reached into his jeans and took him out.

He was hard and burning in my cold hand.

He hissed into my mouth.

"Quiet," I whispered.
