Chapter 23: Flour

The anniversary cake was a lemon cake in four layers, and my mother had been supervising it for three hours.

"More zest," she said.

"It has plenty of zest."

"Your father put zest in everything. He zested a pizza once."

I laughed over the mixing bowl.

It was the middle of May.

The kitchen windows stood open, and the smell of cut grass and wet earth came in over the lemon.

Mount Shavano had lost most of its snow, and the river was high and loud below the valley.

My mother sat on a stool at the counter with her glasses on their cord and a mug of tea, doing no work at all.

She watched me cream butter.

"Karl proposed to me with a ring pop," she said.

"I know, Mom."

"At the hardware store, in the paint aisle. He bought it with the nails."

She smiled at her tea.

"I wore it for a month, and then I got a real one."

"I know," I said again.

"I told Ray that story on our second date. He didn't laugh. He said, 'That's the most honest thing I ever heard.'"
