Chapter 16: The Lookout

Cruz's POV

She had my coat open and her mouth on my throat before the lookout door had finished swinging shut.

I had thought we were coming up for the stars.

The tower stood on four steel legs at the top of the ridge.

The cab had glass on every side and a round iron table bolted in the middle.

Forty miles of black mountains lay under us.

The sky came down to meet them, so thick with stars that every pane was full of them.

It was nine degrees, and I did not feel it, because Lola had her hand inside my shirt.

"You've been careful for a week," she said against my jaw.

"I've been trying."

"I know you have. I let you."

She pulled my shirt up and kissed my chest, my stomach, the bruise she had left on my hip.

I stood with my back to the stairwell and let her do it.

I had been careful since the cabin table.

I had heard her cry out and seen the marks on her skin the next morning.

I had thought: she lost her home and her mother in one day, and I am the only thing she has left.

I had thought: if I am too much, she will leave.

I had never said that aloud.

"Stop it," she said.

"Stop what?"

"Thinking. I can hear you from here."

She unbuckled my belt.

She did it fast, with her eyes up on mine, and I could not look away.

"Sit," she said, and she put her hands on my chest and pushed me back against the table.

The iron edge was cold against my thighs.

She pulled my jeans open and took me in her hand.

I made a sound I did not recognize.

She stroked me, slow and firm, from the root to the head, and thumbed the wet from the tip.

I put my hand over hers and felt the tendons move.

I watched her watch me, her lips parted, her eyes dark in the starlight, and I thought I would lose my mind.

"Lola, wait," I said.

"No."

"I want to do something for you," I said.

She smiled.

It was slow, and it went all the way up, and my wolf lay down and then stood up again.

"Then do it," she said.

I turned us around so her back was to the iron.
