Chapter 17: The Plan
Lola's POV
The truck at the foot of the lookout road was a Forest Service plow.
I knew it by the orange bar across the roof and the number stenciled on the door.
Cruz had shifted before I could stop him and gone down the stairs as a gray wolf.
He came back as a naked man, shaking with cold.
"A plow," he said through his teeth. "One man, asleep with a thermos."
"I told you nobody comes up here."
"You told me that after a truck turned its lights off under us."
I wrapped him in his coat and my own body and held him until he stopped shaking.
On the county road below, a pair of headlights crossed the valley floor, red and blue on the roof.
The sheriff's unit from one of the two counties went by without slowing.
Neither of them had come for us.
We sat on the floor of the tower with the sleeping bag around our shoulders, and the cold came up through the boards.
