Chapter 3: The Garage

The next morning, Ciro kept half his promise.

He stayed away from me until eleven, until my mother went to take a shower, and then he appeared in the kitchen doorway.

“I’ll show you the property,” he said.

My mother heard him from upstairs, over the sound of the water.

“What a great idea, Ciro! Take her around and show her everything!”

“That’s what I plan to do, Soledad.”

We went out into the backyard, among the pines, without touching.

He walked three steps ahead of me, hands in his pockets, back tense.

“I was planning to stay away from you,” he said without turning around.

“You’re really making an effort.”

“This isn’t funny.”

“I wasn’t trying to be.”

We came to a wooden shed with a sliding door beside the house.

It was the garage.

Inside, it smelled of oil, gasoline, and firewood.

A black, four-door pickup took up almost all the space, and the walls were covered with tools and cured hides.

Ciro closed the door behind us.

Light streamed through the gaps between the boards in thin stripes.

He turned around.

He was three yards away, his smoke-gray eyes fixed on my mouth.

“I have a mate,” he said, voice very low.

“I knew the moment you walked in. And she’s the daughter of the woman I’m going to marry.”

“I know.”

“You understand this is a sentence.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me to go sleep at a friend’s house. To go back to Chihuahua. To never see you again.”

I thought of the cedar scent, the hand beneath the table, the fingers inside me.

“I don’t want to leave,” I said.

A growl vibrated through the rafters.

He crossed the garage in two strides.

He lifted me by the waist as if I weighed nothing and sat me on the truck’s warm hood.

“I’m going to do something,” he said, his forehead pressed to mine. “And you’re not going to scream.”

“No.”

“Say it.”

“I won’t scream, Ciro.”

“Good girl.”

He pushed my dress up to my waist.

He spread my legs with his hands, tore off my underwear in one tug, and tucked it into his pants pocket without looking at me.

He knelt on the concrete floor.

His massive shoulders were between my knees, his mouth inches from me.

“Look at me,” he said.

I looked at him.

He lowered his head and ran his tongue over my pussy from bottom to top, his tongue flat and hot.

I gripped the edge of the hood with both hands.

His tongue moved slowly at first, then faster, searching.

He sucked my clit between his lips with cruel gentleness, and I sank my fingers into his hair.

“Ciro,” I gasped.

“Shh.”

He slid two fingers inside me, and I curled them myself as soon as I felt them.

My hips started moving against his face.

He licked and sucked me and growled against me, and I clenched my teeth to keep from making a sound.

On the far wall, an old house intercom crackled to life.

“Ciro? Tamara? Where are you two?”

It was my mother’s voice.

I froze.

Ciro lifted his head, chin wet, and looked at me with infernal calm.

He reached out without letting go of me and pressed the intercom button.

“We’re in the garage, Soledad,” he said in a perfectly normal voice. “I’m showing her the truck.”

“Oh, great! Do you want coffee?”

“In a little while.”

He released the button and smiled at me for the first time.

A slow, cruel, wolfish smile.

“Now you know what it’s like to hold back.”

And he lowered his head again.

A moan slipped out, and I covered my mouth with my hand.

He devoured me with a new hunger, without restraint.

His tongue was inside me, his thumbs spreading me open, and my legs closed around his shoulders.

I felt my orgasm rise like a giant wave.

“I’m going to… Ciro, I’m going to…”

“Do it.”

“But…”

“Do it. In my mouth.”

I came with a swallowed scream, biting the back of my hand until I tasted blood.

My whole body arched against the hood, and he didn’t pull away, drinking me in, holding my hips until I stopped trembling.

He slowly stood up.

He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, never taking his eyes off me.

He carefully lowered my dress and helped me down to the floor.

My knees were weak.

“My underwear,” I managed to say.

“I’m keeping it.”

“Ciro…”

“I’m keeping it.”

He opened the door.

The morning light hit our faces, and from upstairs came the sound of my mother softly singing.

“Tonight at midnight, put on boots and a jacket,” Ciro said, no longer looking at me.

“I’m taking you somewhere with no walls.”
