"Call him," I said.

The surgeon stared at me.

"The anesthesiologist," I said. "Tell him the surgery is in four days and you need a pre-op talk. Tonight, at this clinic."

"He'll refuse. He knows who the patient is."

"Then say the patient's nurse wants to meet him. Say she's scared."

"Sabine," Jude said from the exam table. "No."

"Without argument."

"I can't let you stand that near him."

"You can watch from a chair," I said. "I'm doing this."

By dawn Ollie had locked the beige suit and his friend in the supply closet.

The clinic lobby looked like any waiting room.

Bree sat at the reception desk in a borrowed lab coat, eating a granola bar.

Glenn dozed in the corner under the Browns cap.

At seven the anesthesiologist arrived.

He was a soft, tidy man with rimless glasses and a coffee in each hand.

"Doctor," I said, rising from the sofa. "Thank you for coming."

"You're the nurse."

"Yes."

"I was told you were nervous."
