Chapter 11: Normal Counts

The man on the phone was a pathologist from San Diego, and he had driven to his lab in the middle of the night.

Declan put him on speaker, and we sat on the edge of the bed with a lamp on and the sheet over my knees.

"I'll tell you what I found, and then I'll tell you what I didn't," he said. "Bianca Sutherland has one blood count on file in this state. It's from last February, a routine physical for a life insurance policy."

"And?" I said.

"Hemoglobin fourteen. White count seven. Platelets two hundred sixty thousand. Every number is normal."

I looked at Declan.

"Aplastic anemia would show on that sheet," the pathologist went on. "Her marrow is making cells at a perfectly healthy rate. She doesn't have it, and she hasn't had it."

"Maybe she's in remission," I said. "Maybe she got a transplant when she was young."

"A transplant leaves a record. A donor registry entry, a hospital admission, a pharmacy history. I searched all of them."

He paused.

"There's nothing. No admissions, no prescriptions for anything stronger than an antibiotic. I did find one document. A diagnosis letter from when she was sixteen, signed by a hematologist in Pasadena."

"Who?"

"A man whose license was revoked in 2011 for writing false diagnoses for a fee. The state board has his billing records. One payer shows up on the false letters for a girl named Bianca Sutherland."
